TV - Beautiful People

EEEEE! Logo & the producer of Ab Fab are bringing us a show (loosely) based on Simon Doonan's life. YES PLEASE, I WANT TO GO TO THERE!

Via NY Times:

This week the cable channel Logo began showing “Beautiful People,” a comedy produced by Jon Plowman (whose credits include “Absolutely Fabulous”) for the BBC. It is about Mr. Doonan’s upbringing and his long, colorful haul from Reading, England, to become the most famous window dresser of his era, based on his memoirs of the same title.

Some liberties have been taken, as the series is set in the glam 1990s, rather than the dreary postwar 1950s of his youth, though the author’s distinctive brand of delicious vulgarity remains intact. The first episode begins with the young Mr. Doonan installing a window at Barneys featuring men who look like old lesbians.

BUSHWICK - Beauty Bar comes to Broadway

We are super excited for the grand opening of the latest Beauty Bar - right in our backyard! The 'Wick just keeps getting hotter.
As Eater reported today:

Funny that the self described "hipster chain" Beauty Bar has locations on 14th Street, Denver, SF, LA, Las Vegas, and San Diego, but not in the crux if hipsterdom, Bushwick Brooklyn. Until now. 15 years after the original opened, the bar/beauty parlor chain has made the curious decision to expand to Europe and...the Myrtle stop of the JMZ. The new branch—complete with their "famous" manicure and martini happy hours— debuts at 921 Broadway next weekend.
Stay tuned - we'll report back!

LIVE MUSIC - How Much Do You Love Trader Joe's?

Thanks Racked for alerting us to this event right in our own backyard!

Tonight, 3 bands comprised of Trader Joe's employees (and one that is not) take the stage at one of our favorite BK venues, Goodbye Blue Monday.

Check out Galopogos Now, Cathexes, and The Outabodies.

As this band/TJ's member notes:

One of my favorite things about working at the store is that everyone has some secret identity, some passion they do when they’re not stocking cans that garners little financial return. It runs the gamut, from painters, poets and potters to musicians of all stripes, dancers, video producers, a guy who left another job to help start a new church, DJs, plus one sad and lonely struggling journalist.
We love that too. Go support the team!

FOOD - Sriracha

The NY Times today has a fun article about Sriracha, one of my absolute favorite condiments. I put it on pizza, in stir fries, in mac & cheese, on eggs.... one time Deborah caught me squirting it on mini bananas (which is good, don't judge!) It turns out I am not the only Sriracha devotee to find unexpected uses for it.

At the restaurant Perry St., in New York City, Mr. Vongerichten’s rice-cracker-crusted tuna with citrus sauce has always relied on the sweet, garlicky heat of sriracha. More recently, he has honed additional uses. “The other night, I used some of the green-cap stuff with asparagus,” Mr. Vongerichten said. “It’s well balanced, perfect in a hollandaise.”

In Houston, at the restaurant Reef, Bryan Caswell, a veteran of Mr. Vongerichten’s kitchens, stirs sriracha into the egg wash he uses to batter fried foods, from crab cakes to oysters to onion rings. “It’s not heavily fermented, it’s not acidic,” said Mr. Caswell, who has won a devoted following for the sriracha rémoulade he often serves with such fried dishes. “It burns your body, not your tongue.”

yum! I'll be experimenting in the kitchen very soon!

I had always assumed the rooster sauce (as I call it) was Vietnamese, because usually when I see it out it's at pho restaurants. Turns out I was wrong:

The lure of Asian authenticity is part of the appeal. Some American consumers believe sriracha (properly pronounced SIR-rotch-ah) to be a Thai sauce. Others think it is Vietnamese. The truth is that sriracha, as manufactured by Huy Fong Foods, may be best understood as an American sauce, a polyglot purée with roots in different places and peoples.

NEW MUSIC - The Knife's Darwin-inspired opera, "Tomorrow, In a Year"

As it was reported late last year, The Knife is creating an opera to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Darwin's Origin of the Species. They are collaborating with Danish theater group Hotel Pro Forma. Tickets have gone on sale and Zandland friend Alexia scored a couple for opening night on September 2nd! This is sure to be an amazing event -- cross your fingers for a DVD release of the performance.

Details from the Hotel Pro Forma website:

Concept
Darwin’s perception of nature and time forms the basis for Hotel Pro Forma’s collaboration with music group The Knife and choreographer Hiroaki Umeda, Tomorrow, in a year. An evolutionary opera of change, of transformation and mutation. An opera not about Darwin but like Darwin.

New compositions on a changing stage
Tomorrow, in a year is an opera. The opera concept places the performance on a large scale and in a space of reality where expression dominates. The Swedish music group The Knife creates completely new compositions that challenge the conventional conception of opera. The form is experimental and exploratory.

The music is written for three singers who come from different backgrounds: pop, classical opera and performance. They are the protagonists of the performance, displaying three ways of experiencing the world. They are the spokesman, the organiser, and the one who acts. They are structure, sensation, form, time and thought.

The Japanese choreographer and dancer Hiroaki Umeda creates the choreography for six dancers of different ages and and physical forms, based on classical and modern dance. They are organisms, raw material, bodies that enter into various contexts; they are main and secondary characters in a changing process.

INTERVIEW - Bat For Lashes on NPR

NPR has a fun interview + song session with Natasha Khan (Bat For Lashes). She's got that mystical Bjork-ish attitude that always makes an interview entertaining!

Not quite abandoning the mystical quality of her Mercury Prize-winning debut, Natasha Khan's Bat for Lashes astounds with the lush, beat-heavy Two Suns. On the album, the British songstress explores an alter ego named Pearl, a blonde femme-fatale who acts as Khan's yin to her desert-born yang.

In a session with host David Dye, Khan says she has a "visual" approach to songwriting.

"Whenever I'm writing music it's a very visual place in my mind," said Khan. "It has a location full of characters and colours and landscapes, so those two things really complement each other, and they help the other one to blossom and support the other. They are like brother and sister."

PRESS RELEASE - The Evolution of Beer Series: Beer & the Culinary Movement

Artisanal, imported and craft beers are on the rise. The craft brewing industry grew 10% in 2008, while Belgian beer sales were up 32% in the US in 2008. The Zandl Group surveyed our Young Adult Thought Leader Panel on April 14, 2009 to gain their insights on this trend. This week we’re covering the 4th and final facet of the craft and artisanal beer movement: BEER & THE CULINARY MOVEMENT.

Consumers are increasingly gourmet in their food choices, lead by celebrity chefs, the Food Network and hit shows like Top Chef, access to global products and a new emphasis on locally sourced and organic foods. This evolving palate goes hand-in-hand with the craft beer movement for many reasons:

Culinary shifts: While years ago the finest cuisine was French and then Italian (both of which go best with wine), today’s upscale restaurants run the gamut from Asian (Thai, Vietnamese, Indian, Korean, fusions) to elevated comfort foods (hello, Mac & Cheese with truffle oil) – all of which go better with beer than wine.

Pairings: Renowned chefs are now offering beer pairings with their cuisine, and some establishments are even hiring beer sommeliers to help guide patrons to the right choice. (“Daniel Boulud is opening a new restaurant (DGBG) in the city where he pairs beer with his food.”)

Flavor explorations: As consumers become more daring in their food choices, they are taking the same risks with brews. Craft beers offer complex and robust flavors that are lacking in mainstream pilsners. (“I’m drinking beers that are brewed with unique tastes such as fruit, chocolate and smoke”)

Emphasis on how beer is made: As consumers learn the intricacies of culinary arts through the Food Network and readers discover where their food is really coming from through Michael Pollan’s bestselling books, there is a growing appreciation for how foods (and beverages) are made and where the ingredients come from. This is drawing them into smaller breweries, which are using hand-crafted processes on a non-industrial scale, as well as organic brews. Some are taking it to the next level – home brewing is on the rise as beer lovers are experimenting and creating their own brews.

Affordable luxury: Despite their gourmet status, artisanal and craft beers are affordable, making them appealing in these frugal times.

MUSIC - DIY Albums

As record labels plunge into obscurity, many musicians are taking charge and turning the ill-fate of the industry into opportunity. With the help of iTunes, MySpace, Twitter and a slew of online resources and guerilla marketing tools, many artists, big and small, are turning to self-releasing their work. Not to mention the rise of internet radio, completely offsetting the traditional structure of label-negotiated 'radio adds'. Many services that were once solely in the hands of labels are now widely available online. Furthermore, artists are making connections and business partnerships with visual artists, producers, mixers, booking agents, etc. through social networking venues and other online tools - effectively cutting out the labels (middleman).

While some are getting dropped by their labels, others are simply leaving for the chance to create what they want, how they want it; Musicians can sit comfortably in the driver's seat. The tables are turning.

Artists who have recently self-released albums include Metric, The Breeders, Carina Round (Zandland fave), Lloyd Banks (G-Unit), Fischerspooner, The Shins, Indigo Girls, etc etc.

(Image: Metric's new self-released album, 'Fantasies' has received rave reviews across the board, widespread attention and steady internet radio play)

DIY - Biohacking!

Biohackers: The worst roommates EVER!

IN ATTICS AND CLOSETS, 'BIOHACKERS' DISCOVER THEIR INNER FRANKENSTEIN
Using Mail-Order DNA and Iguana Heaters, Hobbyists Brew New Life Forms; Is It Risky?

By JEANNE WHALEN

In Massachusetts, a young woman makes genetically modified E. coli in a closet she converted into a home lab. A part-time DJ in Berkeley, Calif., works in his attic to cultivate viruses extracted from sewage. In Seattle, a grad-school dropout wants to breed algae in a personal biology lab.

These hobbyists represent a growing strain of geekdom known as biohacking, in which do-it-yourselfers tinker with the building blocks of life in the comfort of their own homes. Some of them buy DNA online, then fiddle with it in hopes of curing diseases or finding new biofuels.

PRESS RELEASE - The Evolution of Beer Series: Local Brews

Artisanal, imported and craft beers are on the rise. The craft brewing industry grew 10% in 2008, while Belgian beer sales were up 32% in the US in 2008. The Zandl Group surveyed our Young Adult Thought Leader Panel on April 14, 2009 to gain their insights on this trend. This week’s facet of the craft and artisanal beer movement is: LOCAL BREWS. Stop in next week for the fourth installment!

The Local Food movement has undoubtedly raised awareness among consumers when it comes to sustainable food production, processing and distribution. Not just limited to the typical farmer’s market fare, this local mentality has infiltrated the beer scene as well.

According to our recent survey of the Zandl Group Online Panel, 66% of respondents said they are noticing more local beers both at their supermarkets and neighborhood bars. Not only are they excited to try different and exciting flavors offered by these small-batch producers, they also feel a sense of community pride when supporting neighborhood businesses and entrepreneurs.

In many instances, the breweries themselves also support local businesses by purchasing ingredients from other producers in the vicinity. For example, Six Point Craft Ales in Red Hook, Brooklyn brews Gorilla Warfare, an American porter made with Ethiopian coffee from Gorilla Coffee, a Park Slope café and roaster. Additionally, many of these micro-breweries are involved with the broader sustainability movement – Cape Cod Beer, for example, sends their spent grain to local farms for use as mulch and feed for farm animals.

Bars that offer wide varieties of local beer are opening up across the country, especially in large brewing cities like Brooklyn, Denver, Milwaukee, Philadelphia and Portland, ORE. As one panelist notes, “I live in a place that provides local brews and am inclined to try them. I suspect more people might also be catching on to this ‘buy or produce local’ craze as well.”

ART - Bklyn Designs

(Photo: Ria Charisse’s tiny gold-plated pewter hand is $20 at Swallow, her Carroll Gardens store)

The seventh annual Bklyn Designs show opens in Dumbo today, a showcase of contemporary furnishings, lighting and accessories designed and (mostly) made in Brooklyn. This article by Julie Scelfo in the New York Times gives a great review of the scene - exploring both retail locations and design collectives throughout the borough (including our neighbors at 3rd Ward) as well as an awesome map and guide to the stores in Brooklyn which carry interesting design. If you can't make it to the show, definitely check out some of the stores!

FASHION - Anna Sui's Gossip Girl Inspired Line for Target

We just learned just learned that Anna Sui is set to design a line of clothes for Target that's inspired by the fashions seen on Gossip Girl.

“I liked the idea of creating a collection reflective of each characters’ style, sensibility and unique approach to fashion,” Anna Sui told WWD. “By combining the elements of art, city, spirit, punk and glamour, we created a collection that exudes New York City fashion.”

The line will be available on Target.com and in select Target stores from September 13 - October 17. Considering how much we love their Go International series and Converse for Target, we're sure this is going to be a hit!

XOXO!

NEW MUSIC/FREE MUSIC/INTERVIEW - Chris Cornell: Scream

Big hats off to Chris Cornell, who's new album had me dancing through the rainy streets of Bushwick yesterday. Produced by Timbaland (feat. Justin Timberlake - um), 'Scream' is a wonderfully crafted hybrid of hard rock vocals and pop/hip-hop dance beats. While I'm sure Cornell's departure from guitar-centric rock is a major turnoff to many of his rock-purist fans (Trent Reznor spoke out against the album on Twitter), I found the album to be a pleasant surprise. After years of heavy hitting Soundgarden tracks, a few alt-rock albums with Audioslave and a solo album in a similar sonic vein, Cornell's new schtick is surprisingly refreshing, and sure to attract a new fan base.
CNN did a nice piece/interview on/with Cornell on the album...and Twitter. Excerpt:

CNN: Some people have said that you've lost your musical identity in this album.

Chris Cornell: I don't have one, really. I don't want to have one. If I had a musical identity that was definable then it would be time to get into painting or something else. Race car driving.

CNN: So you would be happy to be experimental on your next album?

Cornell: Absolutely.

CNN: So what was it like working with Timbaland?

Cornell: He didn't really have a particular direction in mind in terms of what he wanted me to do. He did what Timbaland does, and I did what I do. We just wrote songs, which is really the best thing that came out of it. ...

It doesn't sound like anybody else's record. It doesn't sound like music I've ever heard. It defies genre, and yet it's very much a song-oriented album as well as an album-oriented album. ... The music never stops. I've performed it that way. It's almost like a movie soundtrack.

CNN: How often do you Twitter?

Cornell: It depends. When I'm out on the road, depending on the day, a couple times a day I'll spend a half-hour or an hour or so. I've found that doing vocal warm-ups and Twitter at the same time, cause I'm a multitasker. I can watch CNN -- because I do -- and then I can be online and do vocal warm-ups all at the same time. And only one of those things is way too boring.

Check out the video clip on Bespoke Chocolate's Facebook page.
(Jenny is swinging one of our bags around, and mentions that Rufus' proposal is sure to be a hit because he bought her favorite flowers, tracked down her favorite wine, and "got Bespoke Chocolates"!!!!)
