(Alice + Olivia Keyhole Shoulder Pad Dress on Gossip Girl, 'The Last Days of Disco Stick')
Since the start of the series, Gossip Girl has been a big fashion influencer, introducing (or at least early adopters of) new fashion trends, and has even been the primary source of inspiration for some designer lines like Anna Sui's Gossip Girl Inspired line for Target.
Bows, ruffled plaids and headbands have already made their way from the show to the mainstream (there was even a snarky claim in the last episode that Blair's signature headband was totally 'over'). So what's next, you ask? Well, shoulder pads are the newest recruit to the wardrobe of the always fashionable Serena van der Woodsen (Blake Lively). Monday night, Serena sported a the 'Alice + Olivia Keyhole Shoulder Pad Dress', adding inches of height and width to her shoulders.
'90s retro fashion redos, it was only a matter of time before the classic top heavy look would make it's way to the runways of the today. Trendy, fast-fashion brands like Top Shop and Forever 21 are now carrying their own looks incorporating bigger shoulders, while the big name fashion houses are sending models down the runway sporting their own high-end bulky-shoulder styles for 2010 (Stella McCartney, Marc Jacobs, Balmain, Comme des Garçons).
(Comme des Garçons Spring 2010 Ready-To-Wear collection features more extreme versions of the shoulder pad trend)
