Tech - iPhone Applications & The New Entrepreneurs
Irma alerted me to a great article on the "iPhone Gold Rush" by Jenna Wortham in Friday's NY Times. She profiled Ethan Nicholas' success story - from training himself to build an iPhone Application to make ends meet to earning enough money to quit his full-time job entirely.
As we've reported in our Hot Sheet Year End report and Hot Sheet Live presentations, iPhone Applications are being birthed by the thousands by entrepreneurial young people. Applications are one of the most exciting areas of technology for them. A young adult recently listed 'iPhone Apps' as the thing he is collecting, and universities (e.g. Stanford) are adding application programming classes to their curriculum.
As Irma recently noted,
These new (tech) businesses are more likely to have been founded ... with very little overhead and basically just based on smart ideas. Young people have more online tools at their disposal to help them to maneuver through this current recession.
